Unable to configure NVIDIA 185.18.31 drivers on 9.04
I am unable to properly configure the proprietary NVIDIA drivers on my Shuttle XPC system in Ubuntu 9.04. When I use the xorg.conf file from the previous Ubuntu install (8.10, IIRC) with the 185.18.31 drivers, the screen turns black and does not show the default X background and cursor. The strange part is that I can reproduce the behavior with the open-source 'nv' driver, with the proprietary drivers uninstalled and the kernel module unloaded.
I'm running the 9.04 vendor-patched 2.6.18-11 kernel on a Shuttle FN27 V1.3 (according to the motherboard) with the latest BIOS and an NVIDIA GeFroce 7600GS. I've checked the Xorg.0 log and both drivers (teh proprietary and the open-source) appear to be configuring the card correctly and detecting the native resolution of the LCD panels (1440x900) correctly, but when I start the bare X server with either driver set, all I get is a blank screen with no core pointer and no default background.
I updated the BIOS just prior to installing 9.04, so I never tried to make the new BIOS work with Ubuntu 8.10, so I'm thinking that a BIOS change (or a mis-configured BIOS setting) is responsible for this problem.
