Ubuntu Username and Password

I know this is stupid but I just loaded Ubuntu and the keyboard must have been stuck (it has happened before)when I first set it up. At the username and password, it will not take what I thought was the correct Username and password (I did write it down). Is there a way to boot up and view the current username and password? I am brand new to Linux so please be patient. Thanks in advance for any help.

When you boot your machine, you should get the GRUB menu displayed. If your machine only has Ubuntu, this is probably hidden. After the BIOS checks, you should see "Press ESC to enter GRUB" or something like that. Press Escape, and select "Ubuntu 2.6... (Recovery Mode)". This should boot you into Single User mode, and you now are logged in as root.

Enter the command:
Code:
passwd rdmatt
at the prompt, and enter a new password for yourself. You won't see anything echoed to the screen, but this is OK.

Now enter the command:
Code:
reboot
Hopefully, when the login screen comes up, you should be able to login with your new password.

I hope this helps

Here's how to boot as root without a password. Next, you can set the password using the passwd command.

Edit: (Oops, there's a reply already.)

Thanks so much for the tip. I will give it a try tonight.
