Ubuntu server: kernel panic

Hi,

I have a Ubuntu 11.04 server running that freezes randomly. That is, I have not been able to determine why it freezes. When this happens a lot of (debug?) information appears in the console.

The information that appears in the console also appears in kern.log:
Code:

This appears a couple of times and then a kernel panic occurs, which obviously leaves the system completely unresponsive.

Some (perhaps) useful information:
uname -r:
Code:
2.6.38-11-server
During boot the following errors appear:
Code:
[drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* failed to set render ring head to zero ctl ffffffff head ffffffff tail ffffffff start ffffffff
[drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* render ring initialization failed ctl ffffffff head ffffffff tail ffffffff start ffffffff
[drm:i915_driver_load] *ERROR* failed to init modeset
Does anyone know what is wrong here? Or how I could determine that?

Thnx!

Yo

Kernel panics - escpecially random ones that cannot (clearly) be related to software/activity on the box - could be a sign of hardware failure.

Maybe a humble suggestion: try to run a live CD on the box with something (anything) and see if the thing still freaks out. If not, then it's the install...

At least with that info you can edge towards answers!

Good luck

Thor

First of all, Thor thanks for your reply.
After some fiddling around I retraced my steps and came to the conclusion that my troubles started after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04. From that moment on, I got errors during boot about i915 chip. Google didn't supply me with any useful hits on this.
But to make reasonably sure that my memory was ok, I run a memtest86+ and that didn't return any errors. So I decided to downgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and my box is already running without a problem for two days now. So it seems my problem is solved now.

You really should mark this as solved (under thread tools at top of page). May not be the solution you sere looking for but it is a solution.
