Hi all

Doing alittle research

when installing a mail server on ubuntu, is it possable to change the ports 25 and 110 to some thing else, would the mail server still work ?

or is that the wrong way to go about it

you can listen on whatever port you want, but obviously it depends on what softweare you're using as to how this is achieved. making your clients and users use those ports is a seperate problem though, often much harder. do you need to??

obscurity is not security, and the danger is being an open relay, not being attacked through it.

I pondered a mail server for a small group of a dozen people. In the end I just got everyone a Gmail account. Their SPAM filtering is quite good. If you chose, you can still use standard POP mail clients like Thunderbird and Evolution. Google does my heavy lifting and email is available anywhere on a broad array of devices. You'll find that Gmail does use alternate port numbers for POP and SMTP access.
