ubuntu, kernel panic and bad EIP value.

Trying to load Ubuntu 5.10 onto a Gateway computer, about two years old, 833MHz, 128MB RAM. It boots, but stops at an error saying

there's a whole page's worth of text, but at the top, it says 'Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address bfcfdcc7 and then carries on about EIP etc. Runs no problem on this PC though (2.4, 512 etc)

I have this same problem when trying to run the Ubuntu 5.10 live DVD, however this happens when i first place the Ubuntu DVD drive for initial installation??? I never get to install Ubuntu??? The screen freezes at thispoint.

Does anyone know what causes this.

Gigabyte 7N400-L
512 MB Memory
80gb WD
60 GB Maxtor
13 gig partion formatted to ext2
