i have a windows 10 z620
when i attempt to install ubuntu 18.04 it does not show the option of install along side windows 10.
My question is
if I choose to "do something else"
and in the unallocatted area of the hard drive I make 2 partitions
swap = 32 Gb ( i have 16 GB of ram ) and the remainder of unallocated I formate as ext4 root " "
then how does the boot grub loader "know" to offer a choice of boot?
In previous dual boot builds i get the option of install along side.
But I am not getting that this time
hibernate is off
did a powercfg /hibernate off
my win fs is clean
did a chkdsk /f C: ...and Yes it ran on next boot , ok
fast boot is disabled in bios
and when i (f9) to get to the boot menu I see that i am booting uefi to the dvd live disk , i have also tried a usb thumb ...same story
Distribution: Mainly Devuan with some Tiny Core, Fatdog, Haiku, & BSD thrown in.

Rep:
Swap is only necessary on laptops if you need to hibernate - I just have a / & separate /home - a separate /home partition allows for re installing the O/S if needs be, without losing data - but it is always wise to have an external back up of all your personal data.
(Swap becomes a necessity if you do heavy processor intensive work or run a server.)

The installation media should ask you where to put the boot loader, & look for other O/S.
Have you started the install of Ubuntu and if so, when you get to the installation type screen, do you see your windows partitions?
You can also use gparted from the Ubuntu installer to check this by opening a terminal and simply typing: sudo gparted
Check to see if windows partitions are visible.
You don't indicate if you have the default install of windows which is UEFI on a GPT disk?
Ubuntu has a site with a very detailed explanation on dual booting with windows 10 in UEFI mode so check that out at the link below.
i have since found that THIS win 10 install is mbr / legacy
so that is why a uefi boot to my ubuntu live dvd or usb do *not see the windows 10
i did a msinfo32 and can see the bios is legacy not uefi
i did a disk part , list disk and can see that the boot drive is not GPT ( no asterisk inder GPT )
so now I iether
attempt to install ubuntu 18 in mbr/legacy
or
convert the boot drive of ss-51 to uefi/GPT drive and bios to uefi ( the better idea )
I booted to a usb ubuntu 1804 installer in legacy and installed via legacy bios
while this is not *best* ( uefi is a better option ) it was a solution for me
