Question Ubuntu-7, Installing GRUB


I have downloaded and burnt Ubuntu-7 alternate iso to dvd. Installation went fine till i reached the final step of installing GRUB. i have window vista on first drive i.e. C. when the installer tries to install GRUB to hda0, it says fatal error??????????

i have tried it both on my Core2dual laptop and my desktop pc.
what should i do to make ubuntu bootable??????

I've only used an (old) MBR formatted disk for Vista - no problems.
Maybe you could try installing grub into the Linux partition, and getting EasyBCD (freeware) so that Vista can dual boot Ubuntu. This also works fine.

Been a while since I used the Ubuntu alternate CD, but it should give you the option at install. Normal method is to install to the MBR, but if you install to the root (or boot) partition, you can then chainload to it from another loader.
Vista will cope better than the older ntldr.

I'm curious: Was that against LQ policy or totally bad advice?
