Will ubuntu run okay on a Pentium2, 266 megahertz with 128 megs of ram? I downloaded the live CD to try the distro out first, and it's god awful slow. Takes forever to load the "desktop", and just messing around, took ten or fifteen minutes to load the blackjack game. Is this just 'cause i'm running from the CD-ROM (52x), or is this how Ubuntu will be on my machine, period? Thanks for the help!
Running off any live CD will be extremely slow. I would install it before I made any judgments or decisions. I'm using a Celeron 466 and runs pretty good with Ubuntu on it, certainly better than win98 ever did.
So, I install Ubuntu, and it should work just fine. And if it doesn't, how do I go about installing XFCE, and will that pick up the pace a little bit...?
I have not used it myself but its lightweight and shouldn't bog your system down as much as Gnome or even KDE for that matter. Just follow the steps from aysiu and install it if you think you need it but remember its stil a 266. good luck

To install open up a konsole and type
Code:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
log out
and when you get to the login screen select session and then XFCE
