ubuntu 14.04 64bit with bios support !!!

Hi, I hope this isn't a dumb question.

I've downloaded the ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso from a distribution mirror, checked it's integrity with a sha256 file, so the file is fine.

I created a live usb with usb-creator-gtk, and it's not my first time, and I knew what I'm doing. The usb booted to menu fine, and while booting to desktop it just exited to busybox and a message appeared "unable to find a medium containing a live file system". I found out later that this is caused by the kernel working with uefi system rather than bios. I searched the iso file for a good old bios kernel, and the only kernel I found was the vmlinuz.efi.

So here it is, Is there a 64bit ubuntu 14.04 release with bios support and no uefi? and where do I find it? cause the file I downloaded was the only 64bit desktop iso on the distro page on the mirror.

thanks.

Did you boot the DVD in UEFI or BIOS mode? If you booted the DVD with UEFI, that could be your problem.

You would have to enable "Legacy Boot" (or similar), then boot the DVD using the legacy BIOS. I know that my Dell laptop, even in legacy mode, presents all UEFI boot paths. Make sure you find the one that boots it with the legacy BIOS.

Hope this helps!

To elaborate a little bit: There is no such thing like a "BIOS-kernel", the kernel is the same for UEFI and BIOS, which method to use is determined on the fly. In which mode the kernel is started is determined by your mainboard firmware, usually you will have a Legacy option in your boot menu, like maples pointed out.

Not sure. I would be tempted to just use dd command on the iso to the usb (and be sure you know what that is).

I read this. You are trying to create a usb that is for installing ubuntu 14 to a system. You have an older non-uefi system.

Since the error is can't find live image, I'd have to assume one of two things. One is that the usb you created is somehow flawed or unable to be booted. In the idea of unable to be booted, be sure your system has the usb flash as a hard drive choice, not a usb choice. Be sure the usb is above the internal hard drive order. Boot to hard drive.

Pretty sure this is all you need to answer / change. However, I'm replying with some behavior observations that can help answer this. Specifically, in my experience, when you boot in UEFI mode, a boot menu is displayed asking if you want to Try Ubuntu on Install Ubuntu. OTOH, if you boot in legacy mode, some text is displayed briefly, followed by a picture of what I will describe as a Keyboard, and equals sign, and a "DaVinci" Human ("DaVinci" because the human has a circle around it and is drawn like the artist was known to draw). That is actually a silent boot menu where you can hit ESC to see the boot menu options, but the difference is enough to easily tell if you are looking at UEFI or legacy when you have seen both.
