Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Can't login

Can't seem to login in Ubuntu after update and reboot.Even with the guest account.
Also got error etc/profile not valid variable in the log files if that has something to do with it.

I can login from ctrl+alt+f1 shell. But can't login from the initial graphic login screen neither as user nor as guest.

When i go to shell with ctrl+alt+f1 and after I login i get this :
Code:
-bash export '/etc/profile' not valid identifier.
When i run startx :
Quote:
Fatal server error: Server already running for display 0.
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyInvalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyxinit :giving up.
Xinit: unable to connect to X server : Resource temporarily unavailable.
Xinit: server error
Code:
startx -- :1
- Gets me to the desktop wallpaper and a mouse cursor but only that and can't actually do anything.

Since it said X server was already running on display 0 I tried
Code:
sudo stop lightdm
and then
Code:
startx
, And again it got me to just the desktop wallpaper and a cursor where i can't do anything.

HERE is my xorg.log file. (pastebin link). Please help.
Thanks

as per this thread here

try stopping the existing xorg running (should work by stopping lightdm as you mentioned) and then removing these two files
Quote:
/home/username/.XAuthority*
/opt/.X0-lock
Then try startx, hopefully this is what you need.

Another fellow in that discussion suggested re-installing xorg, but in your situation I'd try the above first.
