Hi! I have a new installation of the latest Ubuntu, latest updates, and I am getting freeze ups. If I start in Classic, I don't get this. I'm thinking it may be compiz to blame.
In compizconfig manager I unchecked the OpenGL plugin sync to Vblank, which I read may be a problem.
Any other tips?? I like the new look and feel, and it would be even better if it didn't freeze!
Does your computer freeze up after you do a particular thing, or randomly?
Try looking at the contents of your Xorg log at /var/log/Xorg.N.log (n being a number), as well as your logs at /var/log/messages. Post any relevant errors toward the end when your system freezes.
Also, try using another desktop environment without compiz, and see if it fixes the problem. If it does, you know it's something to do with compiz, and not something else.
I looked at the logs, but found nothing. Then again, I don't really know what I should look for. I've found that the comp freezes in any start-up: normal, classic or safe mode.
As Linux is known for logging, a kernel panic may be logged somewhere, but where?
I only bought this new laptop because I had trouble with Fedora and nvidia drivers. But that was much better than this! Are there any graphics cards that Linux has no trouble with??

Nope, there is no 'magic' video card that will never have problems.
The HD6310 in your system should be fine, when you've got the software/drivers needed for full support. The only problem with the HD6310 is that its very new, and newer parts tend to have issues with linux.
I'm not quite sure why you changed over from fedora 15 to ubuntu when it seemed like your video card was running fine in fedora....
So installed the amd driver via livna and rpmfusion, but I am still having problems with freezeups. And if I just leave the computer an hour or two, there is no way that it will come back to me. It is dead. Restart calls run fsck manually, which I do, but I don't want to do this all the time.
I need a program to test my computer thouroughly, see if there is a hardware problem somewhere. Any suggestions?
Even with the closed source drivers installed, that doesnt mean that you will be getting full support. Ubuntu 11.04 (or at least unity) seems to be buggy with ATI/AMD cards anyway.....
Fed 15 is also causing problems, but only on this Toshiba. My old laptop, an asus with nvidia graphics runs fine. I have given up on Fed 15 now, I can't waste my time any more. If this Toshiba is too new for Fed 15, maybe Fed 16 can handle it.
Meanwhile,I have to use Win, which is awful, but stable!!
