Ubuntu 11.10 running too slow

Hello!

First of all I apologise for my n00bish knowledge in Linux.

I've been mostly a Windows user all my life, and I've randomly worked with Macs till like 2-3 months ago.
I've recently changed jobs and for the last few months I have been working with Mac OS Leopard - at my work place. This really opened my eyes I must say and it took me to install ubuntu at home. Thing is my ubuntu is running way slower than my Windows 7 installation, and something tells me it should be the opposite...

My guess is this problem comes from the GFX Card drivers. The interface is generally slow, it gets slower when I run any flash content on firefox or do anything else that requires a bit more effort from the GFX card. Other than that everything works fine, it's just too damn slow and it's driving me crazy.
I didn't format my HD before installing ubuntu, I've kept my Windows 7 in a separate partition till I get more comfortable with ubuntu.

I'll leave you my system specs:
MB DFI Lan Party Pro875
Intel® Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz × 2
GFX Card: Asus AH4650 1GB AGP (ubunto sys info says VESA: RV730)
on-board AC'97 random sound card
1,5 GB RAM DDR2
1TB S-ATA HD (ubunto sys info says: 170GB but I guess that refers to the partition in which I've installed it)
Running ubunto 11.10, installed on HD from from CD.

Regarding the GFX Card drivers, all my system info is in Portuguese, so I'm not sure if its a literal translation but I'll try: when I open the additional drivers panel I see 2 sets of drivers 1st one is ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates) and when I try to install it fails (it tells me to check var\logs\jockey.log... I've copied that info into a PDF that is under this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?261qv9wg69a1pc3 ) 2nd driver has basically the same description, except for the "post-release update" thing and it gets installed with no prob at all. But... I see no change in the system performance by having it installed or not! That made me assume the gfx drivers aren't working at all!

For now I don't know what else to do... If you need more info just let me know what info is that and how do I get to see it (remember I'm n00b).

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the help, but I decided to try Fedora instead.
So far every thing's running smooth and this issue was related to ubuntu drivers I guess...

Thanks again
