ubuntu 10.10 kernel recompile issue

Hey peeps.
Ok so i recompiled a kernel according to a guide i googled and found.
It was easy to follow and use.
The problem i am having is that after the recompile of the kernel I can't use it. I see it under boot/config2.6.35 but I can't find it in any of the grub files to set it to default to be used.
I update-grub command and find it in boot/grub/menu.lst but if i hold down shift to pull up boot loader screen it does not show.
Im lost Thanks ahead of time for the help.

It doesn't sound like you are building a .deb which is probably the easiest from a package management standpoint.

instead of
Code:
make && make modules_install
you can
Code:
fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-some-string-here kernel-image kernel-headers
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ke...20Debian%20Way

The entire page might be a helpful read.

You can get already compiled Ubuntu kernels in .deb packages from this PPA repository: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
I posted this just in case you want to try these ready to go kernels.

ill get back to you if i need some more info.

the hole reason doing this is to get a 1000hz system. its for a game server.

ok so i tried this whole tutorial. and it was clear and easy to understand. but apperintly im to dumb to get it to work. jk but seriously im pretty computer savy so ive thaught intel now.

but any ways its still not showing up in startup loadier screen to schoose between what kernel u want to run or mem test or if your running duel boot it have other os listed. but te new kernel i compiled isnt showing.

Am i missing something?
Thanks

also is their a kernel already compiled:
Processor type and features --->
NO Tickless System (Dynamic Ticks)
YES High Resolution Timer Support
Processor family (Hit Enter and choose your processor) ---> Intell pentium D 3.4 ghz
Preemption Model (Hit Enter and choose: Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop))
Timer frequency (Hit enter and choose: 1000 HZ) --->

Power management options (ACPI, APM) --->
Disable everything except ACPI
ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support
YES ACPI Support
CPU Frequency scaling ---> OFF

Thanks again

ok sry had to add
so im looking through the boot/grub/menu.lst and its showing up in the list their but not at the duel boot screen.
it has the img and config in boot/ fot the kernel i compiled.
so how do i get it to boot from the kernel i just compiled.
