Trouble with apt in Intrepid.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
I was trying to install a package on my machine using apt. However, on doing so , I got an error saying there was no installation candidate.
After this, I tried

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I also tried changing the software source to any other server (Main Server, UK server etc...). However, I still got an error telling me some URLs were not found.

Is there any solution for this ? Has the support for Ubuntu 8.10 been taken off ?

Support for 8.10 ended in April 2010. This means that for more than a year you didn't get security updates and bugfixes. Your system is vulnerable. I would strongly recommend to install a recent and supported version.

As said before, continuing with working on that version makes your system vulnerable. Vulnerable systems are not only a danger for you, but for any other system out there, so i strongly recommend to upgrade/install a new version..
