Trouble installing the Brother printeron Ubuntu 13.10
I recently acquired a Dell 17" Inspiron. I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 7, as a dual op sysytem load.
I installed my Brother printer, MFC J430W on Windows with no problems. But I can't get the printer to work with the Ubuntu system.
I have downloaded the drivers from the Brother site (multiple times) and followed the installation procedures carefully.
I have a desktop computer setup, with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. The printer works good with both of those systems.
It is possible I am missing some significant step.
Any suggestions?
Thank you..

Processor Intel Core i7
OS 64 bit Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10

Thank you for your reply.
"I can't get it to work", means the printer doesn't print when I click on "print". The printer seems to not be able to communicate with the computer. Yes, it definitely needs the Brother drivers. As I stated, the drivers for Windows7 install nicely and evrything works well. But for some reason, after I install the drivers for Ubuntu 13.10, the printer does not respond.
Yes, I have tried all usb ports, and I have tried a different cable, even though everything works well with Windows7.
In addition , I have also loaded Ubuntu 12.04 onto a blank partition and tried to get the Brother printer to function there. No joy, the results were the same as with Ubuntu 13.10.

I repeat, " I have also loaded Ubuntu 12.04 onto a blank partition and tried to get the Brother printer to function there. No joy, the results were the same as with Ubuntu 13.10."
I started this thread by saying the printer doesn't work with Ubuntu 13.10. Therefore the printer didn't work with Ubuntu 12.04 also.
To state exactly what I have done in an effort to get the pronter to work with Ubuntu 13.10 is simple.
I went to the Brother "driver" site and downloaded the drivers for the printer MFC J430W. I then installed the two files, which used the Unbuntu Software Center.
Now you may ask if the drivers were installed, to which I would answer, I don't know because I don't know where to look to see if they are installed.
I have Windows 7 installed and I installed the Brother drivers there. Everything works AOK.
Back to Ubuntu 13.10, I tried a different USB cable, I tried all USB ports, I downloaded and "installed" the Brother drivers four times, just in case the download was not good.
That's about it.
Okay, I came to the conclusion that Ubuntu 13.10 isn't cooperating with my Brother printer. So, I downloaded a new iso of Ubuntu 12.04 LST.
I then folowed the exact steps as before, that is downloading the .deb drivers from Brother site and installing them.
Everything worked just fine. So, my little problem has been rectified and I wil just continue to use Ubuntu 12.04 LST.
I thank very body for the replies and suggestions.
