Synaptic , dpkg , update-manager Error 5

I've got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Sony VAIO vgn-fs640/w (laptop) and just recently (past two days) I've been getting this error:

'E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Here's a bit more info:

chris@vaio-ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get -f install
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Read error - read (5: Input/output error)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Same or similar error message on synaptic as well. So my question is how do I fix this?

ok.... wget should tell me I've already got it but:

chris@vaio-ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get -f install wget
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Read error - read (5: Input/output error)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

besides what I'd like to do in get an update using update manager, but I figured since I get the same error across the board I need one fix to fix them all. So how do i fix this broken package list?

Never mind I fixed it myself with
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Wow, you guys should be more on the ball with this, instead of correcting my usage you should have picked up that I actually needed help fixing my package list.
