Strange cursor, selection, and keyboard behavior in Trusty Tahr

I'm an XP refugee who's been running Trusty Tahr on 3 ThinkPads for a week now, and have been frustrated by several things that seem to 'go haywire' together on one machine, triggered by ... I don't know what. (1) The trackpoint / cursor will only select text, not allow typing. Left clicking anywhere in an email or on a webpage selects large blocks of text from cursor location upward. I lost an entire email to this quirk; CTRL Z didn't bring it back. (2) the shift key begins to behave like a caps lock and the caps lock seems to reverse its normal behavior. (3) in Gmail, and in Chrome, clicking on any link or email opens a new window (the default being - open link in new tab, and open email in conversation mode). I've searched and found posts about the caps lock / shift problem, but no satisfactory answer for all of this occurring together.

The only fix seems to be a reboot.

Help?

Maybe?

http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package...hpad-indicator

where you can disable touchpad while typing?

I used the core install of 14.04 (37MB ISO) so I do not use Unity or even a stock Ubuntu install.
I set up my own Ubuntu install.

But it was on a Desktop computer instead of a laptop computer.

Afraid this doesn't sound as if it would be my fix ... X60s have no touchpad, only a trackpoint. But I'll look into it. The weird thing is that all these things happen simultaneously.

Thanks for reminding me of ThinkWiki.org!
