Rep:
Sound not working under 9.04, where it has worked in previous versions
Hey everyone,
I've been trying (unsuccessfully) for the past 3 days to try and get 9.04 to play sound on my laptop. It's newer model (HP HDX 16), but sound had worked on it with 8.10, so I fail to see why it should all of a sudden not work with 9.04.
Here's some info that might be helpful with troubleshooting.
Code:
aplay -l

Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 361b
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at dd000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

I noticed here that under "Capabilities" it says "<access denied>". Could that have something to do with it?
Help would be greatly appreciated with this. It's getting kind of boring doing work without any music in the background.

Was this a clean install of 9.04, or a dist-upgrade?
In any case, there is a bug report about this at launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/332479
There are some possible solutions posted there which involve patching and recompiling the kernel.
A more simple possible fix is posted further down on that page:
Quote:
For the record: This is the workaround till official fix:
_________________
Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :
options snd-hda-intel model=model=hp-m4
then reboot/reload

Sound works, but microphone settings are wrong.
That fix is confirmed on this page at launchpad:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...question/61514
EDIT: I think the
model=model=hp-m4 may be a typo. On the second link it is only listed as
model=hp-m4 . So try it both ways and see which one works.

Are you talking about sound, or just in general? Ubuntu 9.04 continues with pulse audio, which seems to work a bit better than in 8.10.
Here are the release notes for known issues in 9.04:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904
And here are the articles on Phoronix which track the development of 9.04:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...&q=Ubuntu+9.04
One thing I can say is that 9.04 boots a bit faster than 8.10. The new gdm login screen is a nice improvement also.
As with any new version, 9.04 will have a newer kernel, xorg, drivers, and packages, etc.

Try running
alsamixer from the terminal. Use the arrow keys to move around and to raise and lower the volume levels. There should be an entry in alsamixer for the mic. Hit the "m" key to unmute the mic if it is muted, then use the arrow keys to raise the volume on the mic. Hit the
Esc key twice to exit alsamixer.
And welcome to the LQ forums!

mic is not in alsamixer
Well, I already tried that! But mic is not on alsamixer... I just wanted to know how vital_101 patched the kernel from that thread on launchpad... I've been using linux a long time but not feel sure about doing it by my-self...
Thanks!
PD: What I already did is set up my model = hp-m4, so I have sound and some multimedia buttons working... but not the mic...

thanks anyway vital_101; I guess we'll have to wait for that kernel version. I want to ask something else... what do you have on your /../modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file?
here's mine... I guess it's too short...
