Sound not working in some apps or at the same time

Hi!

I have a problem with my Ubuntu 5.04 sound. After I install Ubuntu, and applying that Gnome sound fix on the unofficial Ubuntu guide, I can't get any sound working in games such as Puzzle Bobble. Sound from such apps as Realplayer and Xine are fine and it did work the first time I installed Ubuntu.

Also when some apps such as Realplayer are in use, nothing else makes a sound!! When Xine is in use, sounds from other apps is produced but with a delay. This is quite annoying when I get an instant message in Gaim as you can imagine! I don't know much about how sound is produced in Linux so any help would be greatly appreciated!

My computer is a Dell Optiplex GX260 sff PC workstation with a pentium4 and 768MB RAM and an Intel chipset.

By default, one program using sound will always lock the soundcard. You can look at this thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=344322

Or just run a search, this is a common issue

You need to run a daemon ensuring that several sound applications can access the sound card simultaneously. The most common ones are arts (typically used in KDE) and esd (typically used in Gnome). Fire up your Synaptic manager and install one of those.
