I just finally switched over to 64 bit intrepid because I need the memory for photo editing. My sound is broked. Again.
I only care about SPDIF. It's the only audio connection my computer has. I simply want everything to play out of SPDIF, all the time.
mplayer -ac hwac3 *dvd* works fine and triggers dolby surround on my receiver. There's no hardware problem. But Amarok is silent, even though it says it's playing. Youtube also is dead. No sound.
Alsamixer only has one slider in it. No IEC958 slider this time. Must be that PulseAudio.
OK, so I'm not touching anything. I know there are probably at least 4 separate GUI widgets (sound countrol widget, KDE sound system, Alsamixer, pulseaudio, who knows what else by now) that must be simultaneously set to the right setting in order to get my sound to work. So I'm not touching anything without advice.
Please, what should I do? I so just want my sound to work. I wish it was a simple matter of editing a configuration file, but it's so complicated now that it's simple.

Good reason - professional, high-quality - photo-ed needs big files.

Amarok huh? So this is KDE?
Need to know audio card and asoundconf list

Or the slider is not enabled. Which is probably the problem - in gnome it is accessed from the volume-control appled edit > preferences menu ... trying to remember where it is in KDE. <googles> hmmm ... looks about the same.

Wise - you can mess up badly fiddling with stuff like that - mostly it messes the answers you get. Nice to know this is an un-fiddled system.

huh -tell me about it. It's enough to drive you to slackware.
Not kde right now. I do have kubuntu-desktop installed because my wife prefers KDE. I use amaroK even in gnome because it's the only decent audio player I've found that plays gaplessly. I need sound to work in KDE too...is that impossible? I didn't think desktop environment would change sound that much.
The single slider in alsamixer says "Master".
Clicking on the little gnome speaker icon and going to preferences, it pops up a dialog that says "select device to track and control", then there is both a drop-down menu and a list of devices. I didn't do anything because this doesn't even make real sense. Do I select the device in the dropdown or from the list?
Code:
chaz@brutus:~/video/dvds$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
NVidia
That'll be why you keep having trouble. I take it you have the restricted driver installed?
rt-click on the volume control applet, select "open volume control" - a dialog opens up.
The dialog is called "Volume Control:" and a video-card name. It has 3 drop-down menus - "File Edit Help"
Select Edit > preferences to get a dialog called "Volume Control Preferences". It has a bunch of check-boxes next to slider names. Check all the ones you want to see and exit.
Now adjust the sliders in the volume control.
(If the wrong sound card shows up in the title - you need to change this. rt-click the applet again, select preferences, and select the soundcard.) I suspect you want the ALC888 Digital one. This can be managed on CLI too, with asoundconf set-default-card
Not sure what to do at this point. I can click the Preferences button at the bottom of the pictured dialog. It has the check boxes next to various "Select Tracks to be Visible". IEC958 is already checked, but it says 'switch' next to it rather than 'playback'. I checked the box in the 'switch' tab of the pictured dialog, and now I have sound with Rhythbox! A nearly infinite improvement over no sound. Thank you very much for your help. I never would have figured it out probably. There needs to be a 'man gui widgets' command.
I tried Amarok but it crashed, I don't know if it's a big problem or not. Actually all kde apps have been very unstable; I think it must be the KDE 4.1 thing. I don't know if there is another music player that as gapless playback or not. I may have to find one because amarok crashes when I try to play anything.

Well done, that was exactly right. Go through the list and see what the others are.

I know what you mean - it took me years to notice this little feature because I was so used to non-gui methods.

Amarok is cool, but have a play with Rythmbox - it does mostly the same stuff.

Hmmm... you may be missing a dependency.
I usually advise - either use Kubuntu completely, or custom gnome to work like you feel more comfy.
How you installed the desktop may be an issue too - get it a little wrong and important bits go missing.

My music is once again not playing. All music applications I've tried including Amarok, Rhythmbox, and Audacious actually crash when attempting to play wavs, flacs, or mp3s. I'm surprised there is no better failure mode, but I have to use xkill every time.
Once again, the hardware is working because mplayer -ac hwac3 sends decodable Dolby 5.1 from dvds to my reciever. Mplayer itself stops and shows ??? when attempting to use mplayer to play music, though. Lsof only shows
Code:
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jami/.gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.
The preferences>sound>'test' buttons are all silent.
The switch in the speaker applet for IEC 958 that I originally checked to get sound working is still checked.
I'm at a loss as to how to further diagnose my no-sound-unless-it's-mplayer-sending-an-ac3-stream sound problem.
Something changed then - did you update anything? Did you install anything? Did you remove anything?
The warning is fine, and not part of your problem.
gvfs is the gnome virtual file system - lsof, which is sending the message, does not have full access to this but does not need it.

This is too vague - what do you mean by "music"? Do you mean a proprietary format audio file like wma or mp3?
As with previous advise - try to play a free-format audio file.
Invoke mplayer from the commandline - it provides lots of information about what it's doing when you do that.
I have probably installed a program here or there, but nothing media-related as far as I know. I always run mplayer from the command line. It acts as though it is going to play, says it detects PCM audio and no video and then says playing... but the debug numbers at the bottom freeze and some of them are replaced by question marks. I have to Ctrl+C out of it. This is the same behavior as gui players which attempt to play the media, then freeze. I have tried flacs ripped from my CDs, downloaded mp3s, and wavs that I recorded myself.
Except now I'm noticing that it says 'cannot connect to socket'.

Try using a bitmap font. (Reset to mplayer default fonts.)
Have you changed the location of your ms fonts?
It looks like you have put your fonts in a non-standard location. This may confuse some applications.
Quote:

Presumably you do not have a remote control.
Try upping the verbosity level:
mplayer -nolirc −vv 1.flac
... possibly play with the audio-out -ao flag - possible options are pulse, alsa, and esd.
... but it looks like there may be something wrong with the file (the ??:?? means that mplayer cannot identify part of the stream) - which is odd, since it is so unlikely that the same thing is wrong with all your files. Make sure the file plays in another system - like a portable media player. This was ripped from a CD? How? Can you play the CD OK? Is this a file you have previously been able to play?
If none of this presents any clues, then it is too subtle to appear in this way. You'll have to either get someone to come and look or purge all your players, pick one, install it a-fesh.
Well I have a large collection of music, most of it ripped myself, I also have a bunch of vinyl recordings I recorded myself, and some downloaded mp3s. Nothing works. With any player; gui players like Amarok, aqualung, rhythmbox, and xine all freeze when attempting to play music. They try to open it and play it but then freeze. I tried copying some of this music off to a flash drive and playing it with my netbook and it played fine with both amarok and mplayer there. mpayer doesn't take -vv but I tried -v. The fonts thing is most likely because I have custom subtitle fonts in my mplayer.conf, and those fonts are probably somewhere else on this system.

and the reinitializations.
However - mplayer still ends up using the correct codec for playing the flac.
I'd like to see the output for attempts on a wav and a vorbis file.
I'd like to see this tried for a file which previously could be played on this system.
You should also check dmesg output right after a failed playback.
I suspect that reinstalling your sound will fix this problem.
I moved several weeks ago, and after moving the computer, rebooting it, and hooking it up, sound has been working. But the problem has returned now, with the freezing applications and all.
