Shell access when install when using DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text

Is there a way to get to a shell if the installer using DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text hangs at a certain point?

I need to do this because of a bug in hardy heron on SPARC.

for an explanation, see: http://ops.3rivers.net/wiki/index.ph...Hardy_Heron.29

From the link you gave:
Quote:
One of the menu options is to execute a shell.
Doesn't that work?
If not, have you tried it with the rescue-mode, as described there?
I don't know much about SPARC, but you can also try to get a shell with Alt+F2, works at least on PC.

Nope, it for some reason the console is completely locked up. Normally, I'd sent Ctrl-c when using the newt frontend to stop the silo install. This doesn't seem to work using the text frontend.

I've been trying with the rescue mode, but can't seem to get silo to configure properly. Part of it has to do, again, with having to stop the installation and reboot from the CD once the regular install gets to the SILO configuration.
