I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 server version, I currently have a Slackware box running my network with ETH0 = WAN to the cable modem and ETH1 = LAN to my internal network and sharing the internet connection as well.
How do I set this up in Ubuntu? the folders/files are close between the two versions of Linux but not close enough to just copy everything from one PC to the other.
You definitely don't want to just copy the config files from one machine to the other; that is not going to go well.
But that said, the configuration itself is the same as it was on Slackware, so it should be pretty easy to replicate the server if you know the configuration well enough. Unless you aren't the one who setup the Slackware machine in the first place?
I set it up but I had a lot of help from another posting here, I was able to modify the configuration scripts and was able to port some things over. The DHCP server part of it is working but the server itself is not even able to surf now and could before I started trying to do this.
Somehow I think it is giving ETH0 it's own IP address instead of letting ETH0 get an IP address from the Slackware server that is still running the network even though I have ETH0 set to DHCP instead of STATIC.
Oh duh, I just figured out the problem, I had the static address of ETH1 the same IP as ETH1 of the Slackware box, odd that I didn't get any errors though. I changed the third octal of Ubuntu's ETH1's IP to something else and rebooted.
ETH0 IS getting its IP from the Slackware box, the Ubuntu server can surf now, will post more later...
DHCP is working and handing out IP addresses to the client PCs on the network, I am able to surf on the server but the PCs on the LAN are not able to surf.
If the Client PC is plugged into the cable that eventually gets its IP address from the Slackwhere server everything is fine.
If the Client PC is plugged into the cable that eventually gets its IP address (192.168.20.x) from the Ubuntu server it can ping the Ubuntu server by IP address and DNS name (which is on the ETH1 network card), it can also ping the IP address on the ETH0 network card that is coming from the Slackware server via DHCP (192.168.1.x).
But it cannot ping the default gateway of the Slackware server by IP or DNS name (192.168.1.1) which is odd since DHCP info is coming down that same cable.
I think I have something configured wrong I'm just not sure what.
I gave up trying to do this manually and installed "Firestarter", went through the configuration and the LAN is working fine now. One oddity though is that it is assigning IP addresses backwards instead of forwards like Windows networks do, it started at x.x.x.253 with my PC, then another PC received x.x.x.252.
