After trying half a dozen times, different makes of discs, new discs, old discs etc I have given up. Any suggestions please on an alternative to Serpentine that will work in Ubuntu.

K3b is a good alternative: sudo aptitude install k3b.

If you don't already have it and want to add support for burning mp3's: sudo aptitude install libk3b2-mp3.

Thanks very much for the advice. As a newbie perhaps you could help with the k3b install. No need for mp3 but audio cd for car player would be great.
Where do I start please. Should I download from here...
http://www.k3b.org/

Thanks again

Start a terminal session and type the above command, if it is already in your repository it will be downloaded and installed for you.

If the process completed with no errors. Have a look in your applications menu for k3b.

Almost there, it's in the Applications menu.
Opened okay & clicked start a new project, audio cd.
It says to drag & drop.
I have a music list in the top section but it does not seem
to like to drag & drop to the bottom section.
Thanks again

Update..double clicking the tracks moves them to the bottom section
but after my first try at burning - message says it does not like the medium !

Third try at copying. System has stopped and said buffer over run, speed maybe too high 10x.
Also cd r drive is now frozen, will not open manually either. Will have to try the paperclip method.

Update

Managed to open the tray but system & drive frozen.

What I mean is, if you have mp3 files that you would like to convert and burn as an audio cd, you need to ensure your have libk3b2-mp3 installed.

Thanks again for the help but this was wav to wav.
Also after starting completely afresh testing with just one track this time-
when played back on pc there is snap, crackle and pop for a few seconds at the start only.
Latest attempt with burning one track has resulted in error 254 message & try writing in TAO writing mode.
A google search revealed numerous error 254 message queries.
Really stuck now, any suggestions please.
