run adapt but "package system database is locked"

I run adapt but it keeps telling me

You will not be able to change the system setting anyway because another process the using the package system database. Please close the other application before using this one.

I am sure I don't have any "another process", even I restart computer same thing happens. Can anyone help me fix it?

I am using kubuntu dapper

Try "killall apt-get" and make sure you are switching to root.

I use some sort of "brutal" way and solved this

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg --config -a

I fixed this by deleting the contents of /var/lib/dpkg/updates, (don't delete the directory)

Hope this helps
