ProFTPD and gdm problem (k)ubuntu

I have tried several times to get proftpd installed and was thinking of getting a theme installed for gnome

But of course that doesn't work for me
I'm a new linux user and so far have received challenges on every aspect of this distribution

When i go into terminal and type the apt-get command for proftpd

this is what it says:
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install proftpd
Password:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
proftpd is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Now the weird thing is... it's supposed to be installed?
I can't find the program ANYWHERE

I have tried tyo refrsh the panel
When that didn't work i logged out and back in
and when that didn't work i fully rebooted the pc
and that still didn't work

Gnome Desktop Manager (GDM)
Also nowhere to be found
but it's supposed to come with most distributions now
Where can i find this on my system

Cheers,

Proftpd is installed. It is a server. To access it, you have to use an ftp client from another machine. Actually, you can use an ftp client from that machine also, but that's kind of pointless. For example, if your box has an IP address of 192.168.0.10 you could from windows WSFTP or Filezilla type in 192.168.0.10 as the host and connect to your linux box.

As for GDM, I have had other people have the same problem where gdm wasn't installed from the CD. So just type sudo apt-get install gdm and it should get set up.

If you want an FTP client then you could try gFTP, just do a simple apt-get install gFTP

The question is why would you want a ftp program to get a theme installed for gnome?? You should be able to simply download the gnome theme from the web site you have seen it on.

Your title suggests that you have kubuntu installed?? if true then you should have kdm installed and kdm should be in /usr/bin/kdm but why do you want it??
