Question .placeholder files


Hi,

what exactly is the purpose of ".placeholder " files present in the directories

/etc/cron.hourly, /etc/cron.daily ,/etc/cron.weekly, /etc/cron.monthly ?

In my SimplyMEPIS 6.0, /etc/cron.d/.placeholder reads:
Code:
# DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE
# This file is a simple placeholder to keep dpkg from removing this directory
Is yours different?
What distro are you using? -- it's not in your profile.
I do hope you examined at least one of the files before you posted.
