opening alternative port for Firefox proxy

Hello,

I tried this question in the Networking forum, but got no reply. I hope this Ubuntu forum can help --

I'm trying to get Firefox to proxy through an alternative port on my localhost.

If I go to Connection Settings and enter "localhost" and port 5364 for the proxy configuration, my localhost (Ubuntu) refuses the connection.

I do not have a firewall set up so I've done nothing myself to close the port. My network configuration is the default install of Ubuntu. (This is Ubuntu Dapper. I'm a couple releases behind, but I don't think that will make any difference for this question.)

How can I open this port for Firefox?

Thanks for any help.

Do you have a proxy server (Squid, for example) that listens on port 5364 running on the localhost? Also, can you post the error message - is it just "connection refused"?

Gilead,

Thanks for the reply.

Here is the error message from Firefox:

---
The proxy server is refusing connections
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

* Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
* Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is
working.
---

Will try squid. Thanks for the recommendation.
