Openoffice2 was a temporary package of version 1.9. Ubuntu 6.06 now includes OpenOffice, which is version 2.0.2. When you upgrade, the Openoffice2 package was removed, and OpenOffice was reinstalled. Confusing?
The odt files should open with oowriter rather than oowriter2 which no longer exists. On my machine (Ubuntu Dapper), Openoffice is installed in /usr/lib/openoffice. You should be able to open openoffce by running soffice in that directory. Also, oowriter, etc are links in /usr/bin.
You should be able to change the file associations in Nautilus by right clicking on the file, selecting properties and clicking the "open with" tab. Click "Add" and then "Use Custom Command". Fill in the box with the path to oowriter.
I tried editing ooo-wrapper by changing this line:
Quote:
$SystemInstallDir = '/usr/lib/ooo-2.0';
by changing to the directory which gives me:
Quote:
/usr/bin/ooffice
However, although I get the OOo splash screen and it seems to open, it will not open files--gives me a which filter should I use box. It also will not load any templates.

If you run in a terminal window "ooffice", what happens?
Does the splash screen come up? Does OpenOffice open? On my system I get a blank OpenOffice window - no blank document. If I give ooffice a filename as an argument (eg ooffice filename.odt), it opens with that file. If not, do you get any errors (post them here if you do)?

IBall, Ian and aysiu--
Thanks folks!
The problem seems to be solved. I was afraid of uninstalling and reinstalling, but that is what I did--deleted everything that said openoffice under synaptic and then only installed openoffice.org. That corrected all the problems I had noticed.
Oh, had to install the help file for english too--there are two and the one without the "2" in its name is the correct one.
Apparently there were some older versions of OOo on the disk that were getting in the way and this removed them.
The uninstall and install facility with synaptic seems to work extremely well. It preserved all my settings and templates etc. The only thing that does not seem to be there is a font called WingDings which I think I had before.
Thanks, folks!
PS--I was not getting it to recognize or open any document, to answer your question, IBall. Thanks!
