New to Ubuntu-Studio

I am a long time linux user but new to Ubuntu. I was attracted to U-Studio and put it on my new box. First I installed Ubuntu and tried to use the Aptitude route to Studio - no good: after install I could not get authenticated. I tried this twice - no authentication, no log in. I then got the Studio DVD, this works. The Grub boot which I did not notice in the original Ubuntu gives me several non-working kernels but the generic kernel works and is sufficient, the fact that grub fails to come up almost half the time is not good but that may be a hint at why the Aptitude business failed. I also have a problem with screensaver - once screensaver kicks in I cannot get it to stop and have to reboot, this is not linux as I know it. My instinct is that I need to customize the kernel but would be interested to hear if anyone else has these problems. I am running an Intel i5 on a DH55HC MB.

See this for upgrading to Ubuntu Studio from a default Ubuntu:

Ubuntu studio uses a real-time kernel. I don't know if this is the reason some kernels don't boot, but you can read about the various kernels in Ubuntu studio here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ub...RealTimeKernel
And see this for getting started with Ubuntu studio:
