Networking problem dhcp not working

I've recently decided to try dapper and whilst the install went with out a hitch i'm now strugging to set up the network.

I have an ipcop box dishing out ips with dhcp and it works fine on all the boxes in the house it even works with this box i'm struggling with when i use dsl (damn small). The drivers seem to be loaded fine.
I tried to set a static ip so i could get updates and check that wasn't the problem but when i try with the gui it gives me an error "could not enable device eth1" and when i try with ifconfig it complains the device or resource is busy. This is doing my nutt any help would be most appreaciated.

Ok you'll have to excuse me for my noobishness. After a bit of digging my stupidity is about to become blindingly obvious.
I fired up dsl and check lsmod and relised that dsl loaded a module called eepro100 by default whilst ubuntu was using e100. I assume that this is where the problem lies since it works on one distro and not the other. I know to use modprobe to chage module but how do i go about telling ubuntu to use the other module.
