I've recently downloaded Ubuntu and created a bootable CD and installed it.
I downloaded it using bittorent (if you're not familiar, it's kind of like Napster) and the file name is ubuntu-5.10-install-i386.iso The one you download directly from Ubuntu's download page has that same name.
I just visited the ubuntu site to find more info. The file names do NOT end in "bin" so I think you should download again.
(I'm so new to this that this site won't let me put web URLs in my posts! So... i'll show this one, but you'll need to replace the "--" with "//")
From the page:
http:--mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/5.10/
you select a version, probably the PC (Intel x86) install CD. Just click on it and watch carefully where that file is stored.
As for Nero, I have a version of Nero Express that came with a CD/DVD burner drive. If you use Nero SmartStart, you want to choose CD, Copy & Backup, Burn image to Disc. They key word in Nero is "image" or "Saved project." They will then ask where the image is stored. Choose that click on burn.
Good luck! I really like Ubuntu.
RedBoot
can you please take me step by step using bittorent?
I know this may sound like an obvious point, but are you sure that your bios checks the CD first in the boot sequence ? The only reason I ask, is I sat for many days(daze) trying to figure out why the freakin' thing wouldn't work... turns out it, when I powered on the PC, even though it spun the cd at power up, it actually didn't read it! grumble grumble grumble!
If it helps, here is a list of the files and directories that I have on my Ubuntu 5.10 CD once burned.
.disk <dir>
dists <dir>
doc <dir>
install <dir>
isolinux <dir>

ubuntu
ok. tell me if i am doing something wrong......here are the steps i took.
1.d/l the ISO fron urbuntus website
2. used winrar and extracted it all
3. burned to a cd. it wouldn't let me burn as image.
4. rebooted my pc making the cd-rom #1 in boot sequence
when it booted it went to an a: prompt but i didn't know what commands to type in. I thought it was suppose to come up to an ubuntu thing. need quick replys please. thanks for everyones help.
PS..i thought you had to burn an .iso file? well when i tried the .bin file it said that image wasn't recognized? so i just put all the files onto the disk.

Hold on. Stop. This ISO file is the image that you burn. Do not do step 2. Nero WILL let you burn an ISO.

BTW, Smandola makes a good point. Once you've burned a bootable CD, if it doesn't work, try another bootable CD. For example your Windows XP CD is bootable.
thats what was messin me up!! all these hours over that. anyways, i am now running ubuntu on my desktop. so far i love it and i like the freedom to customize. i will have to re-d/l xp though to another HD for the rest of the family(they're not so efficient with this stuff).
FYI; I switched the computer my kids use over to Linux because I was tired of debugging the thing from all the spyware. They took to it right away, even using Open Office instead of Word without a bit of help from me. I pointed them towards's using Gaim instead of AOL's instant messenger for AIM sessions and they were off! Now if we could figure out how to get a replacement or iTunes on their iPod we'd be all set.
I could not get a downloaded iso file to burn with Nero so I downloaded the burn software CDburnerXP pro that was available at the bottom of the Ubuntu download page. It worked great very easy it clearly states ISO and burned it immediately with no problem. Also a friend had to download the iso file a second time from another source because the first one refused to burn to disc.
