Modem weird connect dial-up

My modem automatically connects during start up. I thought there was a setting to keep this from happening but can't find it, or else I'm thinking of another distro. It isn't in the start up items.

Also the Modem-monitor icon in my launcher bar says I am not connected when I am, and sometimes says I'm connected when I'm not. Seems that something is not reset at the end of each connection, but it does reset after each startup.

Using dapper w/ Zoom dualmode faxmodem, external

system > administration > network tools
... disable the modem, remember to save settings when you log out.

The modem applet dosn't work. Remove it from the panel.
