I have run more than a few versions of Ubuntu, right now at 9.04. I use MC a lot, but I have noticed on every version of Ubuntu in which I downloaded MC, the SMB link (right under FTP link and SHELL link in the LEFT dropdown menu) is never there. I have run Opensuse11.1, Fedora 10 and 11, and their version of MC has the SMB link.
I have used MC since before I ever got X running. I have also used SMB and several versions of Ubuntu. I don't know what 'link' you are talking about. I still use MC the way I aways have. I just navigate to the directory where the SMB share is mounted and access it there.
This link you mention is something I have never noticed... maybe some Ubuntu-centric MC enhancement? Until you find out why Ubuntu messed up your MC enhancement just use MC to open the directory where it's mounted. If you don't know where Ubuntu mounted it just run the mount command and it will tell you. If you don't see the smb mount listed in the 'mount' output... well it's not mounted and no wonder it's missing from your MC.
I am personally very disappointed with Ubuntu. It *is* better than MS windows, though. I'm going to migrate back to RedHat (Fedora) or go to Debian.
Thanks for your response. Yes I know about that approach. What I was commenting on was that on every version of MC that I have used, except on Debian based machine, had a SMB link in the Left or Right dropdown menu in MC. Am enclosing a screenshot. On an FYI basis, I am using Gnome as my window manager. My other Linux box runs Fedora 11 and MC has a menu item called SMB link right under FTP Link and Shell link dropdown Menus.
