migration from Mandriva

I just scrapped my Mandriva to install KUbuntu 7.10.

Apart from the initial diffidence, I am quite satisfied. I managed to install printer, USB ADSL modem (even with some pain) and everything else.

But.

1) No matter how hard I look, I just can't find a place where I can toggle firewalls settings. In Mandriva they were in the Control Centre. In KUbuntu? I don't like being online without a firewall.

2) After all the pains to manage to connect to the internet, now I CANNOT DISCONNECT! I followed the instructions reported at scouforge .net and I get connected at boot, but I just don't know how to disconnect.

3) DURING INSTALLATION, THE SYSTEM DID NOT MAKE me choose a password for root. How can I log in to root? I understood that no password is needed if you use SUDO in place of SU, but I would like to log in as SU if I have to type many instructions in sequence...

I know that these questions can seem silly, and I was unsure if I should post them here or in the Newbie section, but... If someone is kind enough to answer he will have my gratitude.

Thanks

Type in sudo and give your user password. Then type in the command:

passwd root

The passwd command will ask you twice for root's password. From then on you can use the su command with root's password.

If you want to be able to log in as root then go to control center (kcontrol) and click on:

System Administration -> Login Manager -> Administrator Mode

You will be asked for root's password. Click on Users and check root. Click on OK. This will add root to the list of users on the KDM login screen.

knetworkmanager will let you toggle yourself online and off. Not as good as a firewall maybe, but I don't know what you are looking for there, soo.....

The (kx)buntu's don't usually use a root account. To use many commands without typing in sudo in front of all of them just use "sudo su" once, then you will be in a root like terminal session.

Good luck... I hope you enjoy Kubuntu. It's my favorite distro. Feel free to message me if you use an IM. My yahoo ID is vagabondgambler.

Knetworkmanager looks only for network cards (which I don't have). I am online with my USB ADSL modem, and Knetworkmanager says "no device found"

By "firewall" I mean a software preventing people from logging into my machine and doing stuff with my PC from remote.
