"make menuconfig" doesn't work

I just installed Ubuntu 5.10. I tried to compile my kernel w/ the latest one from kernel.org. Somehow "make menuconfig" does not work. I've installed the lastest gcc and still doesn't work. Any idea?
Thanks in advance.

James

You'll need to give us a clue. Did it output some sort of error message?

Sounds like the automake package wasn't installed.

Looks like you need to install make.

All you have to do is type "sudo apt-get install build-essential" then hit enter. If the package is not found then just uncomment the extra repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
