kubuntu video setup

I am installing Kubuntu on a Compaq nc8000 laptop with a Radeon 9600 video card. After installation, the video resolution defaults to 1600x1200. I then use the settings dialog to reduce it to--eg-- 1152x864. This works with no problem.

However, upon reboot, the resolution comes up at 640x480 and the modes available in the settings only go up to 800x600.

Presumably, the startup scripts are seeing something they do not like and are putting the xorg.conf file into some sort of default mode.

What is the most direct way out of this?

Related question: Do you need modelines? A lot of my installs (various distros) have not used them---Kubuntu puts them in by default.

I will try this. However, my hunch is that it will put me back where I started.

The real puzzle here is why--after setting a resolution and the system seeming happy---did it decide to reconfigure itself after a re-boot?
