High newbie to dual boot xp pro sp3 and Kubuntu on different drives!!!
but cant ket my kppp to work with my external modem at ttys0, but will
work if enter sudo wvdial, and also works with other o/s xp pro, whats happening please some help?????????????
I have an external ABC 56k-v90 modem connected, and when in Kubuntu I try and run
Kppp it says initaling modem but does nothing else, so when I run sudo wvdial
thru the terminal window is connects and I use control/c to disconnect, but I run
to Isp's Alphalink 2am-3pm/Dodo after 3pm, so I want to be able to change the isps,
but cant if use sudo wvdial, as cant get kppp to operate(which I can select the ISP's)
can anyone help>>>>>>
As in my dual boot windows the modem works ok at 115kbps

If it hangs at modem init, check the KPPP init strings and so on; they may be incorrect. Other settings to check include the response to DCD; whether it is used or ignored. Also check that the modem and computer do talk to eachother at the selected serial port speed.

What are the settings in the Kppp init strings and how do I check them ,also checking the response to DCD???, the modem and computer do talk if I use sudo wvdial in the terminal window??????

Ignore my previous post; too arcane and not likely the problem. Check your group membership; typically you need to be a member of the 'dip' and 'dialout' groups.
To see which groups you're in:
groups
If you only have a small number of users, I find it easiest to edit /etc/group to add your user to appropriate groups. The user must log out and log back (into a shell or X) before the group change takes effect.

I checked the root/etc/options file and I am already in the dialout????????
update the virus defs in xfprot??????
