check the /etc/ppp/options file and make sure there is a line with "noauth".

I have an external ABC 56k-v90 modem connected, and when in Kubuntu I try and run
Kppp it says initaling modem but does nothing else, so when I run sudo wvdial
thru the terminal window is connects and I use control/c to disconnect, but I run
to Isp's Alphalink 2am-3pm/Dodo after 3pm, so I want to be able to change the isps,
but cant if use sudo wvdial, as cant get kppp to operate(which I can select the ISP's)
can anyone help>>>>>>

As in my dual boot windows the modem works ok at 115kbps

If it hangs at modem init, check the KPPP init strings and so on; they may be incorrect. Other settings to check include the response to DCD; whether it is used or ignored. Also check that the modem and computer do talk to eachother at the selected serial port speed.

Ignore my previous post; too arcane and not likely the problem. Check your group membership; typically you need to be a member of the 'dip' and 'dialout' groups.

To see which groups you're in:
groups

If you only have a small number of users, I find it easiest to edit /etc/group to add your user to appropriate groups. The user must log out and log back (into a shell or X) before the group change takes effect.
