Installing xgl on Ubuntu 6.06

I 've just seen my mates SLED 10 box running xgl (the spinning cube desktop-thing) and it looks great; I'd love to have that on my Ubuntu 6.06 laptop.

However, I'm a newbie and the websites that I've visited that give instructions on how to install xgl are a bit too complicated for me; does anybody know of a website that is more newbie-friendly for getting xgl working?

Thanks very much in advance for any help or advice.

Cheers,

Doctor Strange

The "spinning cube thing" is called 3ddesktop... it looks even cooler in carousel mode if you have six or more virtual desktops.

sudo apt-get install 3ddesktop

(You need DRI enabled.)

to install the gl based x server:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl

You are using ubuntu - always look to the repositories first.

3ddesktop is an old prog for desktop switching, I think that Beryl or compiz is what is been sought after. I have it running happily on my laptop on kubuntu and it looks great. Alas on my Debian Sid desktop it won't work (yet).

A good place for help and details is http://www.beryl-project.org/
