Installed ubuntustudio metapackages over Kubuntu Lucid, no get no sound in anything

What it says. I want to do some music stuff, I was having trouble with rosegarden, so I thought, just install ubuntu studio and it will sort the settings out for me.

Fat chance. I now have no sound from any programs.

I've checked my levels in alsamixer. I can still hear sounds coming through line in, providing that on some level the sound is working.

KDE gives an error message about phonon and the audio device not working upon login.

Some possibly-relevant command output
Code:
tw296@treno:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC887 Digital [ALC887 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
tw296@treno:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe024000 irq 16
 1 [Bt878 ]: Bt87x - Brooktree Bt878
                      Brooktree Bt878 at 0xfddfe000, irq 21
 2 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfcffc000 irq 18
tw296@treno:~$
SB is my onboard sound "card". (Bt878 is a TV tuner. NVidia is I assume for my graphics card's HDMI output, which I'm not using.)

I've tried Google, but nothing that seems relevant has turned up.

OK sort of solved.

If jack is disabled, normal audio applications play fine. (Well, flash does at least).

If jack is enabled, jack aware audio applications play fine. (Tested with Hydrogen.)

The problem is Rosegarden was timidity, by default, being started in a manner that doesn't work properly. When jack is running, running
Code:
timidity -iA -B2,8 -Oj
, as mentioned here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-howto-437834/ creates a second timidity server that works with jack.

It would still be good if jack didn't block "normal" audio applications from running. So not marking solved in case anyone knows how to make jack "play nice" with applications that expect normal alsa.
