Installed newest Ubuntu setting a weak password. Changed password now buggered?

Installed latest ubuntu. Password weak so changed it with
Code:
$ passwd <username>
etc..
Could not then get into it because I'd forgotten password, or something - thought I knew it well.

So entered a root shell in recovery mode. Changed pass word again with the passwd command.

It now accepts this pass word but all I get is desktop background and no menus or anything.

Get impression the encptfs passphrase needs changing. Have the 5ff7.......................... number that was told to write down during install.

What I do to use the Ubuntu?
