I am stuck in an infinite boot loop in Ubuntu 10.10 after upgrading from 10.04(help)

Hello,

I updated to Ubuntu 10.10 today and upon restarting I can't get past the sign on page before it boots again to the ubuntu chime... this is ongoing... I can only access my desktop by going into safe graphics mode. I've tried using CLI to access my gdm but still nothing. I've gone into login and set the machine to boot without stopping at the login page but it stops there anyway...

I don't know what is wrong, everything installed and updated without incident.

I've already backed up my files but I don't really want to go through doing a full clean install if this is something I can fix...

I am not skilled in CLI most of the stuff I use is from picking up in blogs and forums but the repair CLI I know nothing about.

Help please.

I've uninstalled the plymouth set up i had since it used something from linux mint...but the problem remains.

I don't really know the problem and I don't think its as simple as a clean install b/c by all intents and purposes my system should be running fine. all glx and flgrx is installed everything was updated. Something that happens right after plymouth is messing up the load. is there a way to by-pass plymouth?
