Possibly one of these:
/etc/inittab
or
/home/username/.xinitrc

Are you using a login manager (eg GDM for Gnome)?

In /etc/rc5.d there is a file called S99gdm. It is linked to /etc/init.d/gdm. gdm is a script which takes care of starting Gnome.

At startup (in runlevel 5) all scripts in /etc/rc5.d starting with 'S' are executed, so S99gdm as well. The '99' indicates the sequence in which the 'S' scripts are started, 'S99' is the last.

Ubuntu is Debian derived. The location of the .xinitrc and .xsession files which are actually used is one of the best kept secrets, and until now I have not found one article pointing to the right location of these files. Furtunately 'it just works'
