How do I turn on the HUD in Ubuntu?

How do I turn on (or "invoke") the Heads Up Display (HUD) and use it in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

Thank you

I found these references for the HUD on 12.04 with a quick google search:

Quote:
To pull up the HUD, press the Alt key in any application — or even at the desktop. Start typing and you’ll see menu items that match your search phrase.
