Exclamation Help I can't login

Please help me. I am running Ubuntu 6.06 and I restarted my computer. I went to sign in and i put in my username and password and after I do that it goes right back into the logon screen. I know I am using the right name and password and it even acts like I am. It will act like it is loading to go to my desktop put it will go straight back into the login screen. I know it is the right name and password. I have used it many times before.

Try this,
  1. at the login screen do CTRL-ALT-F1
  2. login at the text based interface
  3. do
    Code:
    $sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
  4. do
    Code:
    $startx
Post any error messages that get printed on the screen.

Followed last step

I followed what the person before me told me to do. I took a picture of my screen and if anyone thinks they can help me I loaded the picture at http://www.geocities.com/tylerjroach...?1150332963187

I would greatly appreciate help.

It seems like there is a problem with your xserver. If you have followed my instructions above and you are logged in, in text mode, do
Code:
$sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
change the line that says
Code:
Load "glx"
to
Code:
#Load "glx"
After that do
Code:
$startx
Hopefully that will fix the problem, but if it doesn't post the errors.

Almost Solved?

Ok I think I am getting a little closer. Now there is an error message saying.

(EE) XF860 OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/wacom
No such file or directory
Error opening /dev/wacom:invalid argument

Then it says at the bottom:

Waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1;fixing.

Go back to xorg.conf and use the # to comment out the sections and subsections referring to wacom. I'm assuming you don't have a Wacom stylus writing pad.
