Are you using 32bit or 64bit system?

This is a lib-glib related problem - downgrading it or libgtk would probably help.

32 bit. I have tried downgrading my libglib2.0-0 package but this led to unmet dependencies and new errors.

Solved

code:
sudo apt-get source libglib2
'cd' into top level of source tree.
./configure
make
sudo make install
