i recently came across this thing!!
whenever i logout of GNOME to get back to login Screen, the GDM crashes(i think so!!).
Nothing happens & the screen goes all BLACK
I tried using [ctrl-alt-backspace] to restart X, but nothing happens...
I can't help you, but can tell you the same thing is happening to me in my gentoo install.
If you want to avoid rebooting every time - in a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1), type
/etc/init.d/gdm restart
This does not really fix the problem.
I haven't bothered to investigate this, because mine is a headless system and I rarely run X on it.
But it is odd, and I'd also appreciate help with getting it fixed.
Is there a log file for gdm? Have you checked /var/log/messages or other log files in /var/log/ ?
I have just set this value
AlwaysRestartServer=true
in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
But I can't test this until tonight, as I'm at work.
Would this work for you? I'm not completely certain what this does, but it might not be a good idea if you have multiple X sessions running at the same time.
