I put a script on my desktop. I can not change it's icon like I can with programs. Is there a way to do so ?
Maybe...but again, as with your other thread, you provide no useful details, so we can't guess. Which desktop environment are you using, on which version of Ubuntu??? You've been here long enough to have read the "Question Guidelines" by now.
1. It is a script.
2. And I put a link to it on my desktop.
3. And it will not let me change the icon
In a previous response, my distro and version are listed under " contributing member."
Again:
We know it's a script, but that tells us nothing.
WHICH desktop??? Gnome? Unity? KDE? Enlightenment? IceWM? Other???? Because that makes a difference when assigning an icon, and how you do that.
"Will not let me" tells us absolutely nothing. WHAT DID YOU TRY??? You haven't said what steps you took to actually try doing this.
And again, what distro you post in your profile can mean absolutely nothing...many folks here have SEVERAL listed, and we can't guess/assume as to what you're talking about.
So again: What have you tried? What desktop environment?
I know of only one way to change icons for ubuntu-mate, thus I saw no need to explain how I did it.
Right click on icon, properties, click on current icon and then change it.
ubuntu-mate 16.04
And then what happens? Do you get an error? Or do you click OK to dismiss the dialog and everything stays the same? You say it won't let you change the icon, then you state above "click on current icon and then change it". I'm guessing you mean attempt to change it. You should be getting some sort of feedback.
What kind of file are you attempting to use for the icon? Is it a stock icon? A file you are providing? SNG? PNG? JPG? ICO?
Have you checked if Mate creates an XDG spec .Desktop file in your Desktop directory? If so, edit that file, try to change the "Icon=" line, and possibly log off and log in again to be complete.
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=gv
GenericName=PS and PDF viewer
Comment=View PS and/or PDF files
Exec=gv
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/gv_icon.xpm
Terminal=false
Type=Application
MimeType=application/ps;application/pdf;
Categories=Viewer;Graphics;
mate desktop

And since we had no idea you were using the mate desktop instead of something else, how are we supposed to know this until you told us???? Again...provide details when asking a question.

My click on current icon statement is the method I normally use to change icons.
I have a lot of experience with creating icons and my icon is a png.

goumba makes some good points and questions.
Is it hard to look at this part of all my posts ?

The contents of the script, again, have nothing to do with it.
I wonder if you did something funny when you created the shortcut, like create it as root.
Create a new shortcut to this script as your regular user, and attempt to change the icon. If it works, then something is wrong with the other shortcut. Delete it.

There is no reason for me to create a shortcut as root and I did not.
It appears that your understanding of scripts is limited.
It sends a password to start the program.
I am hopeful that some with more experience with scripts will help me.

I hope you have a great evening. :-)
It appears your understanding of Linux and desktops is limited as the ICON and the CONTENTS OF A SCRIPT are two different entities. You did something odd here creating the shortcut.
As far as my understanding of scripts, take a look at my past responses, I have solved problems with scripts far more difficult than yours.
You have a nice evening. You're the one with the problem, not me. I tried to help, you decided to insult.
Is it hard for you to wrap your head around the fact that WHAT IS ON PEOPLES PROFILES MAY NOT MATCH THE SYSTEM THEY'RE ASKING ABOUT??? How many distros are on MY profile? And on others???? Again, we DO NOT KNOW what you're using unless you say, period. We aren't going to play guessing games, and making someone waste their time trying to figure out why something that works for distro xxx isn't working for you, because you weren't USING distro xxx to start with...because you're asking folks to ASSUME.
Again, you've been here close to three years; you should be very well acquainted with the "Question Guidelines" and "How to ask a smart question" links. If not, probably be a good idea if you read them.
