Cannot install 11.04, 10.10, or even mint errno5

I keep getting this input/output error that says I should try burning the CD at a slower speed, and some things about maybe having a overheating issue and the possibility of my CD-ROM or Hard drive going bad.

Here is what I have tried, with no luck yet:

-Burned another CD at the slowest speed
-Burned a DVD-R at the slowest speed
-Downloaded the ISO from a different mirror
-Ran memtest with no errors
-Ran a CPU test with no errors
-Swapped CD-ROM and HD SATA cables with new ones
-Swapped CD-ROM drives
-Swapped in a known good IDE hard drive
-For good measure, installed a known good piece of memory and ran memtest again, with no errors

I have tried the above changes in trying to install 11.04, 10.10, and the newest Mint with the same error every time.

Can anyone help me out with this? Is there a step I may have missed?

Thanks a bunch!

Hello,

What is the exact error you are getting? Knowing exactly what is being outputted will definitely help, since you already tried a lot of troubleshooting.

Cheers,

Josh

And, did you check the md5sum?

This is a long shot. It is hard to determine with the amount of info we have. You may of received a BIOS or a boot sector virus. A friend of mine told me that if you are having an issue with your CD/DVD rom (along with other issues). The best thing to do is to reset your BIOS, and zero out your hard drive. To zero out your drive. Get a hold of the HDD manufacture for a bootable cd iso. Something like Maxblast 3 will work. I have that, and it works on more then maxtor HDD. If you do not zero out your drive. It will re-install itself.

input/output error.
this particular error is aften due to faulty cd-dvd disk or drive or faulty hard disk, it may help to clean the cd/dvd to burn the cd/dvd at a lower speed. or clean lens.
To check whether the hard disk is old and need of replacement.

Thats the error message that pops up when the install fails.

I shall try zeroing out the drive and resetting the BIOS.

Is there a way to extract some sort of installation error log so I can post more info? I am quite unfamiliar with this distribution.

Thanks again for the help!

I think before trying something like that I would try some other Live media perhaps from the RH branch of Linux.

PCLOS is comparable to Ubuntu in many ways and might be a good choice to try.

I know that when you install slackware. It will tell you more info about the error. I had an issue installing Ubuntu on this pc (locking up). When I went to install slackware. I found out that it was my sd card reader was erroring out. So I unplugged it, and was able to install ubuntu with no issue.

Right now, I am running windows on the same PC I have been trying to install ubuntu on. I used a disk utility to write zeros to the drive, I could have went on a short vacation during this process, haha. Anyway, when the installer for Ubuntu crashed this time, I noticed it gave a list of some files to send along with a bug report that I didn't notice last time. I am sure they were listed there, I just didn't read the message through enough. Anyway, here is the output from the syslog file:

Did you find any solution so far? I have exactly the same issue trying to install ubuntu 11.10 (64bit) on my dell vostro laptop.

What logs should I post to help sorting this out?
