Can't play DVDs after installing libdvdcss4 on Ubuntu 12.10

I've just installed Ubuntu 12.10 and have run:
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
I also have Ubuntu restricted extras installed but I still can't play the DVDs I rented (both VLC and MPlayer complain the disc is encrypted). What might be causing this?

Did you follow this? If not, I'd walk through it and make sure you haven't missed something.

They say to run the commands I've already run. The only thing I haven't been able to do is:

chmod 660 /dev/sr0; chgrp cdrom /dev/sr0

I get
chmod: changing permissions of `/dev/sr0': Operation not permitted

whether or not I run it with sudo.

Wrong region? Check your drives DVD region setting, and the region of the discs you are trying to play.

Try adding the medibuntu repository: http://www.medibuntu.org/repository.php
Then install the libdvdcss2 package.

You can also get the Windows codevs (w32codecs for 32 bit and w64 codecs for 64 bit) from medibuntu as well.

Cracked it! Turned out that my drive had for some reason been set to region 1, I needed 2. I didn't think to check it initially because I've played region 2 DVDs on it before-perhaps something in the installation process changed it? Anyway, I' marking the thread as solved, thanks for your input everyone.
