Can't install 7.10 on a P3, 933 Pentium properly.

Hello all.

I hope I'm in the right place.

I'm new to linux ( once again ) trying Ubuntu 7.10 on Gateway P3 933 with 512 megs of ram and a 20 gig hard drive. My graphics is on board intel 82810 dc133 with 32 megs of ram

I used the Ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386 iso from Bit Torrent.
I put the cd in. It starts to boot, but I don't get into a window.
The only time it would boot to a desktop is if I chose the
oem install ( for manufactures ).
Ok, now big deal as it booted to a desktop.
I installed it, but it had an oem ( temporary user ) for the name, but it did let me put a password in.

Anyway, after install I go to boot it up and it just goes to a choice menu to hit escape and I then choose the Generic option and it does boot into windows.

I did all the updates and I still get that hit escape menu upon booting up and when it boots, I just get a garbled screen now.

Do I have do something with my xorg.conf file?
Also, what editor do I use?

As always, and info would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks.

Mitch

I have a Gateway with the same specs as yours. Ubuntu wouldn't go on mine either but I didn't fight with it - I just tried different distros until I found one that worked. You can probably make it go on if you try hard enough, I mean if you really want 7.10

1. Try your CD in another computer to make sure its good
2. You might drop down a notch to 7.01 version
3. Mint 3.1 went right on mine and it's Ubuntu in green with restricteds enabled up front
4. The new Elive looks very very good - E17 desktop
5. They are all free so try 10/15 of them - http://distrowatch.com

Thanks for the reply CouchMaster. It's appreciated.

Well, had actually got it installed, but the monitor refresth rate what not correct and after doing the updates, I could not boot at all. I mean it would just hang after trying to login at the grub screen.

So I installed again and was bable to do a regular install and not the oem thing. I think I had to do a control escape and it then took me to the desktop where I was able to install it.
I found some good info in the ubuntuforums.org site and followed some directions there.
I had to reconfigure x and at the point in xorg.conf ( I think that was the name of the file ) file, I put a 16 bit instead of the 24 in the monitor section that was in there and I got a very good refresh rate after that.

I got everything working that I tried to. My dvd player, Flash and Java. I mean it you didn't know better, you'd think you on a M$ machine. I even did the updates and it worked after that.
I need to hone up on my command line skills or there lack of. I'm going to stick with it this time.

I don't think compiz installed and Im sure that specks in the pc are just to low for it....

Well, I'm at work now and break is over. I just hope everything I explained is correct. I'll check when I get home and if I'm wrong, I'll post back..

Thanks for the reply..

Mitch
